Chug Games (chuggames.com) is run by David Höglund in Sweden, who is responsible for the personal data described here. Questions or requests: hello@chuggames.com.
Playing without an account
The names and photos you add to a game stay on your own phone, in your browser's storage. They are never sent to us.
Only if you choose Accept all in the cookie box, your browser sends us anonymous usage pings to help us understand how the games are used: when you open a game, start a deck, draw a card, get a chug break, finish or quit, plus one ping a minute while the game is open on screen. Each ping contains the time, a random device code, the spice level, the number of players, the chug setting and which screen you are on. The random device code is kept in your browser's storage until you clear it, so we can count returning devices; it is not linked to an account, a name or a photo. We do not store IP addresses ourselves. The pings are kept for 24 months and then deleted.
If you create an account
- What we store: your email address, your password in hashed form (scrambled one way, so we can never read it), the date you joined, the date you last logged in and whether you are a founding member.
- Why: so you can log in, and so we can keep the founding-member promise: Chug Games will start costing money later on, and accounts created before that stay free forever.
- Legal basis: the agreement you make with us when you create the account (GDPR article 6.1 b).
- Login cookie and session: one cookie keeps you logged in for up to 180 days. It points to a small session record on our server that holds only your member number.
- Protection against abuse: sign-ups, failed logins and failed account deletions are counted using a one-way code made from your IP address or email. The counts are removed shortly after 15 minutes.
- Who processes it: only us and our web host STRATO, a German hosting company that stores the data for us as our data processor. Like most web hosts, STRATO's servers may keep short technical logs that include IP addresses. We never sell or share your data.
- How long: until you delete your account.
Most Likely (the multiplayer game)
- What we store while you play: the name you type, your selfie (re-saved by our server as a small 360 × 360 picture without any hidden photo data), the game settings, and for each round only that you have voted, never who you voted for. Votes are stored only as totals per player. With very few players, or if results are shown before everyone has voted, others may be able to guess how someone voted.
- Who sees it: only the players in the same game, through short-lived links that work only for them. Their browsers may keep a copy of the photos for up to 10 minutes. Other players can always take a screenshot, so only join games with people you trust.
- On your device: your browser keeps the game code, your player number and a secret key for the game, so you stay in the game if you reload the page. They are removed when you leave or the game ends.
- How long: everything about a game is deleted when the host ends it. Otherwise it is deleted automatically after 12 hours without activity (2 hours for a game that never started); the clean-up runs whenever the site is in use, so in quiet periods it can happen a little later.
- Why and legal basis: to run the game you asked to join (GDPR article 6.1 b). Before you join you confirm that you are 18 or older and that your photo may be shown to the players.
- Protection against abuse: new games, join attempts and failed requests are counted for up to an hour using a one-way code made from your IP address.
Error reports
When something breaks on a page, your browser sends us an anonymous error report so we can find and fix the bug: the error message, the page, where in our code it happened, the type of device and browser (for example "iPhone Safari") and the time. When our server hits an error, it notes the error and where in our code it happened. Reports are designed not to contain names, photos, game codes, IP addresses or keys: links are stripped of everything after the question mark and long key-like strings are removed. We keep them for 90 days. To stop floods of reports, the number of reports per network is counted for about 20 minutes using a one-way code made from your IP address. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the site working (GDPR article 6.1 f). We also keep anonymous daily totals of how many Most Likely games are created, started and finished (just numbers, nothing about who played) for about a year.
Cookies and storage on your device
- Always on, because the site needs them: the login cookie (only if you have an account), the players, photos and game in progress that Ring of Sin saves in your browser, the game code and key that Most Likely saves while you are in a game, the player names, settings and score that Spy saves (it can also copy the player names Ring of Sin saved on the same phone; nothing leaves the phone), and your cookie choice. All of this stays in your browser until you clear your browser data.
- Only with your OK: the random device code and the anonymous usage pings described above. Choose Only necessary and nothing is sent and the code is removed.
- We use no advertising cookies and no third-party trackers.
- You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings, also linked on every main page.
- The legal basis for the usage pings is your consent (GDPR article 6.1 a). You can withdraw it at any time with Cookie settings; that stops the pings straight away.
Your rights
You can delete your account and everything stored about it at any time from the account page. Deleting your account also ends your founding-member status. You can also ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it or to delete it by writing to the address above. If you think we handle your data wrongly you can complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY).
Fonts
The pages load their fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers to download them.
Age
Chug Games are drinking games for adults of legal drinking age. Do not create an account if you are under 18 or under the legal drinking age where you live.
