Drinking games for two

Ten drinking games that work with just two people, for a date night, a pre-drink or a night on the sofa. Most need nothing but drinks; a few need a deck of cards.

A few ground rules make every game on this page better: pour small sips, keep water on the table, and agree that anyone can pass on a question or a dare by drinking water instead.

1. Ring of Sin

A phone and drinks

Kings Cup on one phone, and it works with two players. Every card names who does what: truth or dare, duels, questions, house rules and random chug breaks. Pick a spice level and pass the phone back and forth.

2. Never Have I Ever

Drinks

Take turns saying something you have never done, like "Never have I ever missed a flight". If the other person has done it, they drink and tell the story. With two people the stories get longer, which is the best part.

3. Truth or Dare

Drinks

Ask "truth or dare?" and take turns. Answer the question honestly or do the dare. Refusing costs two sips. With two people, keep the dares small and fun and skip anything the other person does not want.

4. Who's More Likely

Drinks

Read a "who is most likely to" question. On three, both of you point at who fits best: yourself or the other person. If you point at the same person, that person drinks. If you disagree, you both drink and argue about it.

5. Would You Rather (guessing version)

Drinks

One person asks a would you rather question. Before the other answers, the asker guesses which option they will pick. Wrong guess: the asker drinks. Right guess: the other person drinks.

6. Higher or Lower

A deck of cards

Turn over the top card. The other player guesses whether the next card is higher or lower. Wrong guess: drink one sip for every card in the current run. Three right in a row: swap roles. Aces are high, and an equal card counts as a wrong guess.

7. Two Truths and a Lie

Drinks

Say three things about yourself: two true, one made up. The other person guesses the lie. Wrong guess: they drink. Right guess: you drink. It works best with things your partner does not already know.

8. Categories

Drinks

Pick a category, like car brands or cocktails. Take turns naming something in it, fast. The first to hesitate for more than three seconds or repeat an answer drinks, then picks the next category.

9. Questions Only

Drinks

Hold a conversation using only questions. "Why are you looking at me?" "Can't I look at you?" The first to make a statement, hesitate or laugh drinks. Harder than it sounds.

10. The Movie Drinking Game

A film or series and drinks

Pick a film you both know and agree on three rules before it starts, for example: drink when someone says the title, when a phone rings, or when the hero says a catchphrase. Keep the rules rare, or the film will win.
